The
Westerner considers the mask as a work of art. The
African considers the mask as a necessary ritual
instrument or cult object, a product of his culture.
When people wear masks, their faces
are hidden. Their identities are concealed, and the
expressions of their masks projects a new identity. This
change is more impressive and dramatic when the features
of the mask are unnatural, grotesque, or frightening or
are abstracted from a human or animal figure.
The masks in this
exhibition were created by 5th through 12th
grade students. They7 are part of an on going
exhibitions through out the year.
