Dear Parents and Guardians,
In addition to sunny days and family trips, summer break often brings the “summer slide”--the loss of academic knowledge and skills due to lack of practice. Research shows that English Language Learners experience even greater setbacks due to decreased exposure to English and fewer opportunities to read, write, speak and listen to English. As students return to school this fall, many will begin the year with achievement levels lower than where they were the previous spring.
AST’s required summer reading assignment for high school students is designed to continue the momentum of reading and writing in English that teachers and students have built over the course of the school year. The two tasks include reading and responding in writing to a novel and to at least four news articles. Specific instructions are provided to guide students to complete the assignment. The assignment is due the first day of school and the tasks will support their first learning activities of the course.
In addition to this required reading assignment, please encourage your child to read, write, speak and listen to English as much as possible during the break to ensure he or she does not suffer from “summer slide.”
