Curriculum>>Design

Curriculum is composed of many diverse but interdependent parts and by its very nature is in an ongoing state of growth and improvement at all schools.? As information and resources change in different subject areas and as the school community undergoes change so will the curriculum.

Development of curriculum occurs through the;
1.      school's on-going Curriculum Project, (following the school’s design for a written curriculum with instructional strategies, assessment protocols, and reporting documents)
2.      WASC Accreditation Self Study,
3.      implementation of the Review Cycle, and
4.      Rubicon system.

Curriculum in each subject area is developed according to a common AST design and terminology involving three “layers”:
1.      PK-12 subject area standards,
2.      division level benchmarks per standard, and
3.      course outcomes associated with units that align with standards, benchmarks, ESLRs, and
4.      instructional practice that ties learning to the school’s ESLRs

Beliefs Regarding Curriculum Development:
·        Curriculum work is a continuous process.
·        The students' needs are best met through the articulation of a balanced process and content curriculum.
·        All areas of curricular work reflect efforts at the coordination and articulation of a?? K-12 scope and sequence.? Close attention is given to transition years.
·        The curriculum must be developed to include performance indicators.? These indicators tell what the students should be able to do in order for the teacher to assess whether or not the students have reached the goal / benchmark and understand the content and process.
·        What is being assessed and how it is assessed reflects what the curriculum is.

AST has a written core curriculum that is based on USA and Canadian Standards. The curriculum design below represents the way in which our curriculum is organized. All curriculum and instructional strategies implemented by teachers are informed by our Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs), which are noted and explained following the Contents of this book.

Detailed curriculum documents are available through the Registrar or Director’s secretary for all subjects at all grade levels.
